American Institute New Jersey Would Like to Help Classmate by Donating Blood

Posted in News on February 22nd, 2012 by Randy Proto

Clifton, NJ – The American Institute, New Jersey Campus is asking for its students, staff and the community for help with blood donations.  On February 10, 2012 a student from American Institute was pleased to welcome their daughter into the world, but unfortunately she was born very premature at only 1lb. and needs a blood transfusion in order to live.

The staff, faculty and students at American Institute are asking each other and members of the community to help their fellow classmate by going to the Hackensack University Medical Center to donate blood.  Donations should be made in Baby Gomez-Ramirez’s name.

“AI is a family within each classroom and then within the school as a whole,” stated Jean Hegg, Medical Assisting Instructor at American Institute New Jersey.  A member of our family is in need of help. Luis is a very dedicated young man who I, along with AI, am honored to have as my student. Luis, Angelica, and big sister Jessie are looking forward to starting their lives together as a family with Luis in his new career and baby Isabel was the “blessing” they prayed for. I encourage all my students and co-workers to do what we do best, help those in need. Please help this very “little miracle” by donating an hour of your time and some blood. It is truly one of the greatest gifts you can give.”

Mr. Christopher Coutts, Campus President and COO of American Institute added, “It is times like this when we need to come together as a community and that is what makes this campus so special – we all think of each other as family.  As a parent myself I truly understand how we would do anything for our children.  I encourage everyone who may read this to think about Luis and his family and to come out and make a blood donation for his daughter.  I am certain that the gift you will give will never be forgotten.”

Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute, commented, “Many people step up and donate blood when there are major crises, but what we forget outside of large scale crises is that for so many it is the simple act of donating blood that allows them to live for another day.  For this baby today is truly that day, and we hope everyone will join us by making a donation.”

The Hackensack University Medical Center is located at 30 Prospect Avenue, Hacekensack, New Jersey.  You can make an appointment by phone at (201) 996-2000.

Today We Honor Our Veterans, We Should Do It Everyday

Posted in News, Other Interesting Things on November 11th, 2011 by Randy Proto

This week I attended, for the second year, an event conducted by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) and heard some extraordinary individuals speak about the sacrifice and struggles of our latest generation of veterans. In so many ways I found it inspiring.

The truth is, all veterans inspire me. But two individuals were particularly inspiring at the event: Marine Corporal Aaron Mankin and Paul Reickhoff.

Cpl. Mankin, a Marine journalist, was serving in Afghanistan when his vehicle was hit with an improvised explosive device (IED). 16 Marines were thrown from the vehicle. Six were killed instantly. Aaron’s entire body was horribly burned. He has since undergone over 50 surgeries. If anyone could get a pass for being bitter or throwing in the towel, it would be Aaron.

But Aaron isn’t bitter.  Instead he is an upbeat highly articulate spokesperson for veterans’ issues; a likeable ‘regular guy’ who has dedicated himself to helping others as he raises a family of his own – and who is anything but ‘regular.’ I can only hope to become the man that Aaron is.

As of today, there are 47,017 veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. 47,017. They and all who serve deserve the best we have to offer.

Paul Rieckhoff, IAVA’s co-founder, graduated from Amherst and was working on Wall Street when he was called to active duty. On his return in 2004, I am sure he had a decision to make: what to do with his life. He chose to found IAVA with a lot of personal debt and a dream of helping his fellow veterans. In typical veteran fashion, he likely wouldn’t view that as an extraordinary decision. Today, IAVA is the largest, most prominent group dedicated to helping Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and has helped all veterans by becoming a major force for change and advocacy in Washington, DC and nationwide. Just take a minute to think about the difference this one man has made. Imagine that.

We set today aside to honor our veterans. It is the second of two such days, Memorial Day being the first, set aside to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to protect and defend.

These two days are less than 1% of the days in a year – just as Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are less than 1% of the population. Said another way, 99% of us currently rely on 1% of our fellow citizens to protect the freedoms we so cherish.

And we officially honor them 1% of the time.

Reality check. That’s 99% less than we should.

These are the sons, daughters, wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends who sometimes wake to gunfire or dirt or destruction while we wake to music or the sound of an alarm clock.

They are those who move forward into harm’s way while we wait for our coffee.

They miss the birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, holidays and so many other aspects of our normal routine.

They don’t begrudge any of us who have not served a single minute of the normalcy we have. In fact, having spoken to many of them, they celebrate the fact that we here have that normalcy.  In some ways it is that normalcy and our freedom to have it that they fight for each day.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with our foreign policy one thing is certain, without this willing 1%, and the rest of our population who are living veterans from prior years – and the many who made the ultimate sacrifice – we would not enjoy the freedoms we so cherish. There are plenty of nations whose citizens do not.

We owe all who serve, in any capacity, in any conflict, at any time, a debt that is not easily repaid.

But ‘easy’ isn’t part of veterans’ lexicon and has no place in the dialogue about this debt.

My dad was a veteran of WWII. He came home, got a job, raised a family and built a home.  I don’t know all of his struggles – he just wasn’t the type to talk about them. I do know I loved him, and he me. I know he loved his country and his fellow veterans. And I know that he would never say that his part of paying that debt to this next generation was too hard or costly.

And neither should we. Saying thank you to our veterans is nice, and they appreciate it. But the 12.1% who are unemployed would appreciate a shot at a job even more. The ones suffering from PTSD would appreciate better benefits, not lesser as some cuts being discussed in Washington might cause (haven’t they sacrificed enough?). The ones who want to complete their education would appreciate quicker, less costly paths to finishing.

These are the things that say thank you. Today, and every other day, let’s repay our debt.

Happy Veterans Day.

American Institute team’s up with Gilda’s Club in support of the “Hair Because We Care” Campaign

Posted in News on October 27th, 2011 by Randy Proto

Margate, FL – Throughout the entire month of October, the Salon at American Institute School of Wellness and Beauty is offering pink hair extensions to the community for $20 each.   The entire purchase will be donated to Gilda’s Club “Hair Because We Care” campaign.

American Institute School of Wellness and Beauty has teamed up with Gilda’s Club of South Florida in support of their “Hair Because We Care” campaign.  “With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the American Institute cosmetology students wanted to find a way to contribute to the cause while using the skills they learn in school,” said Mr. Richard McCulloch, Campus President.

Gilda’s Club is named after the famous Saturday Night Live comedian, Gilda Radner, who was affected by and ultimately succumbed to ovarian cancer.  She envisioned a place where people with cancer and their family could come to be educated, make new friends and find hope.  In 1997, a dedicated group of volunteers opened Gilda’s Club of South Florida in Fort Lauderdale.  Their club welcomes everyone touched by cancer, encouraging a sense of expertise among members and emphasizing community building, collective wisdom and shared experience.  For more information about Gilda’s Club of South Florida please visit www.gildasclubsouthflorida.org.

Patrons who purchase the hair extensions will also receive a Sparkles Plush Dog, recreated after Gilda’s own Teacup Yorkie.  “The students and staff at American Institute have a goal in mind,” added Mr. McCulloch.  “They hope to reach $600 to donate back to Gilda’s Club and they are working very hard to get there.  The Salon is also offering several spa specials to the public throughout the month of October including manicures, pedicures, massages and much more.   We encourage everyone to come and support this great cause.”

Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute, added, “I applaud the efforts of our Cosmetology students.  This is a wonderful organization and I believe in its mission.  Finding hope and getting education during a time when a family member is sick is important.  If the efforts of our cosmetology students help one family find hope then they have done a great thing.”

American Institute School of Wellness and Beauty Donate Time to Raise Awareness

Posted in News on April 4th, 2011 by Randy Proto

Margate, FL – On Saturday April 2, 2011 the Massage Therapy students at the American Institute School of Wellness and Beauty donated their time at the Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk.  Great Strides: Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event. Tens of thousands of individuals came together to support the cause, and to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. American Institute was part of the volunteer efforts in Ft. Lauderdale.   The students provided chair massages to the participants and donated the proceeds back to the Foundation.

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.  The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) is a nonprofit donor-supported organization; their mission is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease.  For more information about the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation visit http://www.cff.org/.

The very next day, April 3, 2011, the Massage Therapy students from the American Institute School of Wellness and Beauty volunteered their time again, for another great cause – the Epilepsy Walk the Talk 5K.  American Institute students provided complimentary chair massages and collected donations for the foundation. The Epilepsy 5K Walk supports the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida to help raise awareness about Epilepsy and seizure disorders.  It raises funds to support services for the 360,000 Floridians living with epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure and overcome challenges created by epilepsy.  EFOF serves as the lead advocate for the rights and needs of people with epilepsy and seizure disorders at the local, county and state level.  For more information about the Epilepsy Foundation visit: http://www.epilepsyfla.org/

Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute, added, “Wow, our Massage Therapy students were certainly busy this weekend.  I think it is wonderful that they participated in these two great events that assist individuals living with these chronic and sometimes life threatening disorders.  Together, they contributed their services and their skills to help make a difference in the lives of many individuals.”

Richard McCulloch, Campus President of American Institute School of Wellness and Beauty added, “It was a great weekend for our Massage Therapy students and it is my hope that they not only gained some great practical skills by participating in these events, but that they also believe they made a difference in the fight against these chronic illnesses.  Great job team – as always I am proud that you represented our school and community so well.”

Fox Institute of Business Changes Its Name to American Institute

Posted in News on March 14th, 2011 by Randy Proto

Clifton, NJ – Today, Fox Institute of Business proudly announced that they will be changing the name of the School to American Institute.  Calling it “Necessary to reflect both the growth and changes in program offerings,” Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute stated, “The name change is really just that – a name change.  It won’t change anything about the education we have always offered at our Fox Schools.”

American Institute School of Health Careers Marches for Black History Month

Posted in News on February 15th, 2011 by Randy Proto

Lauderdale Lakes, FL – On Saturday February 12, 2011 American Institute School of Health Careers students participated in the 3rd Annual Black History Month Parade.  25 students along with some of their children marched proudly wearing t-shirts with an American Institute logo and a great school banner. Despite the intermittent rain that led to the parade itself being cut short, the pride of the American Institute students shone brightly as they mingled and interacted with community residents and local dignitaries.

February is Black History Month; a time to remember important people, events and history from the African-American community.  Black History Month actually started as Black History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. The goal of Black History Week was to educate the American people about African-Americans’ cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements.

The Black History Month Parade was an impressive event which included marching bands, community groups, floats, and music.  In the middle of all the excitement were the students from American Institute who carried the American Institute School of Health Careers banner as well as the Sigma Eta Gamma and Leadership banner with great pride through the streets of Lauderdale Lakes.

Richard McCulloch, Campus President of American Institute School of Health Careers said, “African-Americans’ have a proud and strong history that deserves to be celebrated, and it was wonderful to see students and their families participating in this event that celebrates the great heritage of all African-Americans’.  Education is the key to understanding what makes us all who we are, and I hope that everyone takes some time this month to reflect on the history of our Country’s African-American population.  We must never forget the circumstances they overcame which makes their accomplishments that much greater.”

Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute added, “I believe we should celebrate the accomplishments of all individuals every day, but I am realistic enough to know that we rarely stop to think about our heritage and the sacrifices others have made for us to have the ability to live the lives that we do today.  Seeing as I don’t think we stop to remember those who have come before us enough, I am gratified to know that the students from our Lauderdale Lakes campus stopped, celebrated and remembered the sacrifices and accomplishments of this Nation’s African-American population.”

Fox Institute “Goes Red” for Heart Health

Posted in News on February 14th, 2011 by Randy Proto

West Hartford, CT – On Friday February 11, 2011 and Monday February 14, 2011 the students, staff and faculty at Fox Institute wore red to support heart health for women.  Fox Institute hosted a fundraiser in support of the American Heart Association and all proceeds raised will be sent directly to them.

To raise money for the American Heart Association Fox sold red ribbons for $3 from Thursday, February 3rd through Thursday, February 10th.  Students and faculty who purchased a ribbon were allowed to dress in blue jeans and wear red to class on either the 11th for our day students or on the 14th for our evening students.  The entire campus was encouraged to spend some time during the day they wore red remembering those who lost their lives to heart disease and those who are struggling with poor heart health.

Go Red For Women celebrates the energy, passion and power that women have and share as they band together to try to wipe out heart disease and stroke. Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s solution to save women’s lives. With one out of three women still dying from heart disease, they are committed to fighting this No. 1 killer that is largely preventable. GoRedForWomen.org is a source of information and educational components that connects millions of women of all ages and gives them tangible resources to turn personal choices into life-saving actions.

Karen Springer, Campus President of Fox Institute said, “I was elated to see a sea of red on campus on the 11th and the 14th.  It means that our students are taking heart disease seriously and if we can save just one life by educating our students about the dangers of heart disease then I will feel like our efforts were all worthwhile.  I know I am paying more attention to my own heart health after this week and I have encouraged all of our students to do so as well.”

Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute, Fox Institute’s parent added, “It does my heart good to know that so many of the American Institute campuses are doing so much to make our students aware of the dangers of heart disease.  It is a serious issue that we all, especially women, must pay attention to.”

Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s solution to save women’s lives. With one out of three women still dying from heart disease, they are committed to fighting this No. 1 killer that is largely preventable. GoRedForWomen.org is a source of information and education that connects millions of women of all ages and gives them tangible resources to turn personal choices into life-saving actions.

Richard McCulloch, Campus President of American Institute School of Health Careers said, “Our student population is predominately female, so understanding the dangers of heart disease is very important to their daily health.  Events like this one help us to have camaraderie on campus while we educate our students about the deadliest disease that affects women.  I know I will be wearing red in support of all of the important females in my life.”

Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute added, “Wearing red for heart health will help spread the word in our community about the dangers of heart disease in women.  As our students prepare for careers in medical fields understanding the danger that heart disease poses to women is vital to their success.  After all, the disease is taking the life of one in three women which is almost one woman every minute.  These are staggering statistics that make paying attention to heart disease very important.  It’s good to know our students, staff and faculty are already paying attention by wearing red.”

SMART boards Installed at American Institute Campuses

Posted in News on January 24th, 2011 by Randy Proto

White Plains, NY – Today American Institute announced it is installing SMART board technology at all of its campuses.  Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute today praised the new technology, saying “The SMART boards are really added pieces of technology that will enhance the student experience.”

In 1991 SMART introduced the first SMART interactive whiteboard.  Today, the technology is becoming more prevalent in schools as well as businesses.  The SMART Board is an interactive whiteboard that provides many practical uses for the classroom. Thousands of teachers and students are experiencing improved learning outcomes and heightened engagement from the use of SMART board technology.

According to the SMART board website (www.smarttech.com) research indicates that interactive whiteboards benefit student engagement, learner motivation and knowledge retention. The technology has been successful in reaching students with a variety of learning styles, including those with special needs.

Proto added, “Currently, the SMART boards have been installed in five of our six campuses.  The reason we decided to bring this technology to our classrooms is that we believe that learning should not only be challenging and thought provoking, but also interactive and fun.  The boards, and response systems will allow students in the classroom to actually interact with their instructors during lectures as they answer questions through remote controls that are reminiscent of a gaming system.  Our world has changed and with the advent of new technology always comes greater expectations that schools find innovative ways to engage students in the learning process.  Today American Institute took an innovative step that is being received with great reviews at the campus level.”

Students from American Institute Remember Haiti Earthquake Victims

Students from American Institute Remember Haiti Earthquake Victims

Lauderdale Lakes, FL

– On January 12, 2010 the students, staff and faculty at American Institute School of Health Careers spent the day remembering those who lost their lives, homes, family members, and friends in the horrific earthquake that struck Haiti one year ago.

American Institute and the leadership group wrapped individual votive candles with the Haitian flag colors, red and blue, and attached to each candle a small note that included a message to honor all those who perished and who were affected by the January 12, 2010 event.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic, and affected an estimated three million people.  The Haitian government reports that an estimated 230,000 people died, 300,000 were injured and 1,000,000 were rendered homeless.

The votive candles were distributed to students, faculty and staff in remembrance of the events that occurred one year ago.  Richard McCulloch, Campus President of American Institute School of Health Careers said, “I am so proud of all the students for taking time to remember those who have been affected by this horrible tragedy.  Being located in South Florida means we have a large Haitian population both in our community and on our campus.  So when the earthquake hit, it hit all of us pretty hard.  We think about those affected by the terrible tragedy daily but it was important to mark the one year anniversary in a special way.   I continue to hope and pray for the safety and well being of the residents of Haiti.”

Randy Proto, CEO of American Institute added, “As we watched the tragic events of January 12, 2010 play out on the television last year we were all horrified by the pain and suffering that we witnessed.  However, at the American Institute School of Health Careers campus, it was very personal as there is such a large Haitian population both on campus and in the surrounding community.  To many of us the devastation was images on a screen but to many at the Lauderdale Lakes campus of AI it was their homeland, their family members and their friends.  I applaud the School for taking the time to remember the events of last year, as they should never be far from our hearts and our minds.  In addition, I encourage all of them to use it as a learning experience.  As individuals training in health careers they should understand the need our global community has for their services, and for their training.”
