Gainful Employment for All?

Posted in Education, Public Policy on August 18th, 2010 by Randy Proto

I recently wrote in the Huffington Post about a new proposed regulation, called Gainful Employment.

It is a rule that sounds good in concept – it is designed to make sure that the only college programs with career oriented majors that get supported by taxpayer subsidized student loans and grants are the ones that lead to ‘gainful employment’.  But its implementation as it is currently structured could cause a sweeping  detrimental effect on postsecondary education.  But that is not the premise of the article. I will deal with that – the flaws and effects - in another post and article.

The rule currently is proposed to dominantly be applied to for profit career colleges. The article’s premise is simple: if it works – apply it to all colleges to protect all students from wasting their time and money. If not, don’t apply it at all.

Take a look at the article….

    Randy,

Excellent article on “Gainful Employment.” I agree that if the program works for some colleges that it should be applied to all. I don’t want to see my tax dollars potentially wasted on a program whose metrics are not viable and only apply to select institutions. Thanks for your insight.
