Improving College Affordability
| Posted in Education, Public Policy on July 23rd, 2010 by Randy Proto |
There are many ways to improve college affordability that have to do with innovation and improving productivity. I will write about some of them soon. In any event, they will naturally occur over a long period – a decade or more. Or they can be accelerated by supportive public policy at the state and federal level. I fear based upon this latest round of federal education policy regulatory activity that in terms of supporting innovation and productivity we are in some ways stepping back rather than moving forward. Time will tell.
But, there is a way all students could be assured improved affordability today. I discuss it in my Huffington Post article. It is to improve the structure of the federal student loan program.
Interestingly, some people react negatively out of an ideological position. I don’t actually espouse particular view on the funding of higher education in the article. I will discuss my view in a separate post. But, borrowing to pay for school is a reality today and for the foreseeable future. My point is to make sure that the basic repayment structure for all students is as affordable and flexible as possible, without requiring them to jump through hoops, and to leave in place the special arrangements that can help those who still struggle. Hopefully to be needed by fewer students.
Give it a read in that context…
